KRK Rokit 5 Gen 4 Studio Monitor Speakers Review

Pair of KRK Rokit Gen 4 5" Studio Monitor Speakers

Updated 6 February 2020

The KRK Rokit 5 Gen4 studio monitor speakers provide stunning sound quality and precision.  KRK Systems are recognized leaders in the studio monitor space and have been producing award-winning audio products for many years. KRK Systems are owned by Gibson Brands – a household name in musical instruments and equipment.

The new KRK Rokit 5 Gen4 monitor speakers come with very quiet, responsive Class A/B amplifiers driving a composite 5″ woofer and a kevlar 1″ tweeter. Both the woofer and the tweeter are a distinctive yellow – like bringing a ray of bright sunshine into your studio!

I was using a pair of Yamaha HS8 powered speakers which also sound fantastic, however, I was finding them too big for the room I’m working in. They were overpowering for the size of my studio space. This is an important consideration for others who are just starting out – you don’t need to go too overboard with the size of monitor speaker – if you’re in a smaller room, probably a 5″ driver is plenty.

I started doing some research to see what else was available with a smaller driver size and I came across these KRK Rokits with a 5″ driver which lots of people were recommending. I decided to give them a go and I have been very happy with them so far.

Sound Quality

The bass response with only the 5″ driver is impressive – I can hear low sub frequencies of bass guitars and kick drum sounds all the way down to 45hz which is awesome! Initially, I had a subwoofer with them as I thought I may be missing out on the lower frequencies, but I ended up not turning the subwoofer on much. If anything, I find my mixes are fuller in the low end now when I try them on different speakers. This is probably because I’m now mixing with a more natural frequency response in the lower end.

Built-in EQ and Active Room Tuning

KRK Rokit 5 G4 LCD Display and controls

The latest generation KRK Rokit’s come with the very clever digital Active Room Tuning technology. Utilizing your Andriod or iOS device and the KRK app, the built-in DSP helps you optimize EQ settings for your room acoustics and get the speaker placement and levels just right. There’s also a parametric EQ built-in with 25 different settings and a backlit LCD display on the showing the current EQ configuration. The LCD display is backlit so it’s easy to see and adjust even in a dark control room.
